CST and Butterfly Conservation
All of our nine primary schools across Cathedral Schools Trust have had the brilliant opportunity to work with the charity Butterfly Conservation this year. Their 'Wild Spaces' project, funded by the National Lottery, aims to create spaces in school grounds that are good for butterflies and insects, and, most importantly, where children can engage with nature.
Projects across our schools have included creation of wildflower meadows outside classrooms and adding planters and pollinator friendly species to playgrounds, alongside workshops and surveys to see what wildlife is in our schools.
Work at Victoria Park Primary School has been featured in a Butterfly Conservation schools guide and we are excited to see what insects visit our improved school grounds over the coming seasons.
El Walker, Sustainability Lead for CST says: "It has been so amazing to see our pupils' engagement with nature and seeing how small things such as agency to design a space, adding a planter or choosing specific pollinator-friendly plants can make a difference. With all of our schools being urban schools, it's even more important to give children the opportunity to learn about their local wildlife, connect with nature and learn how they can make positive changes. A massive thank you from us to Angus from Butterfly Conservation for all his enthusiasm and support setting up these projects in our schools."
